Use a screen protector

I had an issue recently that prints were failing at the same place on the build plate.


I posted this image on an Elegoo support group of Facebook, but the answers were not convincing.

These are three identical models, but only one is failing, and when I did other models they failed at the same place. It is not an issue with the model, or how it is orientated, etc. It is also clearly not levelling as that would apply across the entire build plate if it happened in the middle of a print as the entire baseplate is at the same level - more likely the base would not print properly.

I was worried the screen might be faulty - that would give bad results in just one region - though you would think it would give vertical holes where the pixels failed.

So what about an issue with the film on the base of the vat? I emptied the vat, and it looked okay. Not perfect, but as good as it did after a few uses.

What I did notice the screen had resin on it. I have not had a leak, but resin seems to get everywhere!

Fortunately, I use a screen protector, and could just replace that. This is the old one:


I am not absolutely certain that was the issue, but I have done two good prints since, and the issue seems resolved.

The moral here is always use a screen protector!

A Modular Viaduct (part 2)

I am doing a demo at the local N Gauge Society members day on Sunday, and will be assembling my viaduct to display it. To get it ready, I have been busy painting the last two days, so more photos. I painted iron arch bridge with bright colours, and it turned out well, I think, though my painting skills are not great. The plate girder bridge I did in plain grey. Similarly the lattice bridge. I am  not so happy with his one; the proportions seem out somehow. An extended brick arch. And some filled in arches, with businesses. Again, very pleased with how these turned out.

Corfe Castle Station

Corfe Castle is a small village in Dorset. The station is on the line from Wareham to Swanage, which closed in 1972, but was preserved along the Swanage end. Corfe Castle was the only intermediate station when part of the national network. It is an attractive station, with interesting rooves. I recalled that there was a plan and elevations in Railway Modeller in 1976, and managed to find it. I took a photo, used GIMP to remove distortions, then imported that into Blender. After sizing, I could them use that to get the proportions right. I visited the village in 2019, but did not make it to the station as I had the family in tow. I could just about see it from the castle though.
