96602-96609 - Motorail Van (side-loading)

This is a rather obscure wagon that was converted from a mark 1 coach. It seems to have run in pairs, and there may have only been two of them; image here.

It was an experiment by GWR (the modern company), between 1999 and 2005, and seems to have failed as a business. They were later used Network Rail Brake Force Runners, and there are photos of them in that role here.

It is not my era, but people were expressing an interest on a thread on the N Gauge forum, and suggested they would be happy to pay, so I had a go.


It is a pretty straightforward model, but took me several goes to get it right - in particular to get the height right on the chassis, a Lima BG, but eventually I got there.


Two coaches each were dispatched to three gentlemen. The first time I have posted models, and the first time I have posted a parcel at all for a good five years.

 My first post was back in February - before I had even purchased a 3d printer, and it is now November and I am writing the introduction... This blog is all about my experiences for 3d printing. A Modular Viaduct (part 2)

I am doing a demo at the local N Gauge Society members day on Sunday, and will be assembling my viaduct to display it. To get it ready, I have been busy painting the last two days, so more photos. I painted iron arch bridge with bright colours, and it turned out well, I think, though my painting skills are not great. The plate girder bridge I did in plain grey. Similarly the lattice bridge. I am  not so happy with his one; the proportions seem out somehow. An extended brick arch. And some filled in arches, with businesses. Again, very pleased with how these turned out.

Corfe Castle Station

Corfe Castle is a small village in Dorset. The station is on the line from Wareham to Swanage, which closed in 1972, but was preserved along the Swanage end. Corfe Castle was the only intermediate station when part of the national network. It is an attractive station, with interesting rooves. I recalled that there was a plan and elevations in Railway Modeller in 1976, and managed to find it. I took a photo, used GIMP to remove distortions, then imported that into Blender. After sizing, I could them use that to get the proportions right. I visited the village in 2019, but did not make it to the station as I had the family in tow. I could just about see it from the castle though.
